Product 3/4
With the invention of the automobile, the pass over Donner Summit was made accessible and from 1913 to 1928, the Lincoln Highway crossed the Sierra through Donner Pass, following most of the old Dutch Flat-Truckee route. This was part of the nation’s first coast-to-coast road for automobiles. The Lincoln Highway was designed to be “free of tolls and open to lawful traffic of all description.” On the east side of Donner Pass circa 1910 the route wound its way down the steep slope to Donner Lake following a route constructed to build the Southern Pacific Railroad and the old Donner trail.
